Welcome

WELCOME

On this site you will find resources and ideas for teachers and parents, games and challenges for young people and information for visitors.

Discovering new paths of learning in a library is enjoyable.
You can follow your interests and become inspired to explore even more, so that you can learn more or understand better.
Many sources are available to help you – books, documents, maps, photographs, pictures, sound and film and internet. The National Library can offer you all of these.

In the seven sections of this website, you can find out what kind of place the National Library of Wales is, and how you can make use of the place to support your own learning.

Click on any of the pictures on the left to see what this site contains.

News

During 2006 the Library held seminars and workshops to mark 60 years since the end of the Second World War. These projects were sponsored as part of the TPYF (Their Past Your Future) programme, and the Library's Education Service and Culturenet Cymru produced work packs to accompany them.

The packs discuss life in Wales during the Second World War, and highlight the efforts made on the home front.

There are primary and secondary versions available as PDF files - in both Welsh and English - in the Resources section, and you are welcome to download these for use in the classroom.

The Library

Take a look around the Library itself. You can discover interesting facts, and gain an impression of the building, the work that goes on here, and the collections. This section can also be used as a resource to encourage children to read and research.
The education website has been prepared as a comfortable and easy introduction for any visitor. Our aim is to welcome online learners and teachers into the world of the Library, and we hope you’ll return often to search for material. Young researchers can enjoy the challenge of finding out information by using the entire website as a basis for a Discovery Task in the Resources section.

Visiting

If you would like to contact/visit the Library with a group of children, students or colleagues, this is the place to find contact details and how to organise a visit. There are guidelines here to ensure a relaxed trip. Also you will find a list of the learning sessions which are offered by the education service, for teachers and pupils, which you may wish to include in your visit.

Research

How can you take advantage of the National Library?
For an introduction to how to research and find the source material you want, or to get your hands on some useful learning resources to help you in your work – either at home or in the classroom – then read this section on researching. You will find here a simple introduction to the services available, and about how to research with the support of the Library itself, and online support.

Resources

In this section you will find our learning resources - some for teachers, others for children, and some of general interest. This section will grow gradually, and we welcome suggestions for new areas requiring resource material. The more interactive section for children can also be used for enjoyable learning, based on the collections and work of the Library.

What's on?

The Calendar provides an at-a-glance look at the variety of exhibitions on display at the library from month to month.

Comments

We hope that this section won’t be a one-way dialogue.
You are welcome to offer your views - on the website itself, on the experience of coming to the Library, on the usefulness of the resources - and to suggest ideas which would meet your needs. A feedback form provides a direct link to the education service. We welcome all responses.

Children

The young visitors section is a lively area, with its Competition, Puzzles and Exhibition wall. Here, the collections of the Library can become a play area and thinking zone for the young, in age or spirit. ( The tasks in this section can also be used in the classroom.)
